Biography

Sebastien ROTH has been working on mechanical structure under dynamic loading for almost 15 years. With a specific interest on biomechanical structures under to dynamic loadings, he develops models, tools, and procedures to improve the prediction of the behavior of structures under severe impacts or blast loadings. The classical Finite Element Method is used for main simulations of high speed loading. However, some limitations exist concerning this method, especially for erosion of material, where the classical grid of the FE model deforms a lot and lead to too large distorsion. In order to avoid this limitation, the smooth particles hydrodynamic method, initially developed in the field of astrophysics, appear to be a very interesting way to simulate structures under loadings such as perforating impacts, and to simulate fracture mechanics. This method is then used in the field of mechanical structures (material forming process, impact biomechanics, penetrating impacts) to simulate complex loadings. His research highlights are:

  • Development of a Biomechanical model named HUByx (Hermaphrodite Universal Biomechanics yx)
  • Validation, and use of HUByx model for a military context: penetrating impacts, non-penetrating impacts, blast loadings.
  • Development of an “in-house” Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics” code to simulate high speed loadings for penetrating impact applications, and high speed forming material processes.

Sébastien ROTH is currently Editor-In-Chief of “Human Factors and Mechanical Engineering for Defense and Safety”, Springer.
